御神渡り · Lake Suwa

The god has not crossed Lake Suwa in eight winters

When Lake Suwa freezes over, the ice can buckle along a seam and throw up a ridge that runs from one shore to the other.

八剱神社 reads that ridge as the track of 建御名方神 crossing the lake to reach 八坂刀売神, and has recorded its appearance since 1443 — not as a measurement, but as a divination. The direction of the cracks is read for the coming year's harvest, and the result is still filed with the Japan Meteorological Agency each February.

That is why a 583-year record of one lake's ice exists at all. Nobody set out to keep one.

That is longer than any absence that has ever ended in the era the record counts season by season — the previous longest ran 6 winters, from 1992 to 1997. 八剱神社 puts a run of this length level with one from 1507 to 1514, though that earlier run was recorded under a different definition of the crossing.

By the shrine's own count, 明けの海 has been declared 80 times since 1443. Twenty-seven of them fall since 1989. That count spans the 1742 change in what 御神渡り means, which biases the early era toward fewer failures — so it understates rather than overstates.

Counting only since the definition settled: 5 failures in the 50 years to 1950, against 25 in the 34 since 1989.

What this record is, and is not

  • 583 winters on record, 1444 to 2026the ice is determinate for 567 of them and unsettled for the other 16.
  • 八剱神社 has judged this lake since 1443with the observation suspended by decree for 21 winters, 1872 to 1892 — the ice for those winters survives in other hands, but the shrine's judgment does not.
  • the crossing is recorded per seasononly from 1990 — earlier crossings sit in 『諏訪史料叢書』巻17, undigitised.
  • The ice-on date survives for 397 of 583 winters — thinnest across 1694–1743, where the ledger recorded only the day the ridge was inspected.

They were listening for it

For the first two and a half centuries the entries carry a time of day, and the times cluster at dawn — the mean is 6:20 in the morning. That is when Suwa's temperature bottoms out, and it is also when nobody can see anything.

You cannot look at a lake in the dark and judge whether a ridge has risen across it. What you can do is hear it: ice contracting in the cold splits with a report that carried across the whole basin. In the earliest record 御神渡り is the crack, not the ridge.

The handover shows up in the data. Under 当社神幸記 the gap between the lake closing and the crossing being recorded runs two to four days — about as long as a sound takes to happen. By the 1890s it averages more than twenty, which is about as long as a ridge takes to rise far enough to see from the shore.

Then the state stopped it

In 1871 the new Meiji government abolished the viewing ceremony by decree. The entries stop for twenty-one winters. Villagers in 小和田 kept informal notes through the gap, and 八剱神社 petitioned to restore the ceremony in 1893.

氷は膨張して割れるものだ位に片づけて、こんな迷信はやめた方がいいと観測を中断してしまったのです

They wrote it off as ice expands and cracks, that is all — decided such superstition had better stop, and broke off the observation.

And the sources do not agree

Two digitisations of this lake's record disagree about nine winters.

The spine every climate paper uses is the Arakawa compilation, which merged every source it could reach without recording which datum came from where. NSIDC also carries the 八剱神社 ledger as its own series. Where the two overlap they do not always agree — and in eight of the nine, the compilation says the lake froze while the shrine's own book says it did not.

Neither is corrected here. Both are published in the CSV, and the winter each one describes is the same winter.

How the judgment is made

八剱神社 certifies a crossing only when three ridges appear: 一の御渡り from the south bank to the north, 二の御渡り in the same direction some days later, and 佐久の御渡り from the east bank, crossing the other two. What matters is an unbroken line from shore to shore, because the ridge is read as the trace of a god’s crossing.

When the three appear, the 御渡り神事 is held. Around sixty people — the 宮司, the 氏子総代, the 古役 and the district heads of 小和田 — walk out to read the cracks, and divine from them the year’s crops, its weather and rainfall, and the fortunes of the age. The result is written into the 御渡注進状 and filed with the 宮内庁 and the 気象庁. The 御渡り神事 is designated an intangible folk cultural property of Suwa.
