Episode 28
Becoming — くなる/になる
Learn to describe change — things getting hotter, neighborhoods becoming lively, wanting to become a teacher.
Things don't stay the same. Seasons change. You get better at things. Neighborhoods transform. Today you learn to say all of that.
What You'll Learn#
Drop い, add くなる to describe change (getting cold, getting better)
寒くなります (It gets cold)
Add になる to describe change (becoming quiet, becoming a teacher)
静かになりました (It became quiet)
New vocabulary: なる/なります (to become), 〜くなる (becoming, for い-adj), 〜になる (becoming, for な-adj/nouns)
Lesson Transcript#
い-Adjectives: Drop い, Add くなる#
The same stem manipulation you learned for negative and past forms works here. Drop the final い, attach くなる.
な-Adjectives and Nouns: Add になる#
な-adjectives and nouns use になる instead. The adjective stays unchanged; you just attach になる.
Nouns Work the Same Way#
Nouns follow the exact same になる pattern as な-adjectives.
