な-Adjectives

Learn な-adjectives — a whole new category of describing words that connect to nouns with な and conjugate with です forms you already know.

N5na-adjective

Not every describing word ends in い. Some need a bridge to connect to nouns. That bridge is な.

What You'll Learn#

〜な + nounN5

な-adjectives connect to nouns with な (e.g. 静かな町 — a quiet town)

きれいな日です (It's a beautiful day)

い-Adjective vs な-Adjective Comparison#

い-Adjectiveな-Adjective
Modifying a nounちいさい部屋静か部屋
Presentちいさいです静かです
Negativeちいさくないです静かじゃないです
Pastちいさかったです静かでした
Past Negativeちいさくなかったです静かじゃなかったです

The きれい Gotcha#

きれい ends in い, so it looks like an い-adjective. It is not. きれい is a な-adjective. You say きれい日, not きれいい日. The negative is きれいじゃないです, not きれいくないです. This is one of the most common mistakes learners make. Burn it into memory: きれい looks like い, acts like な.
