〜ば
if ~
〜ば is one of four main conditional forms in Japanese. It expresses a general or hypothetical condition — "if X happens, then Y." The ば conditional emphasizes the condition itself and is commonly used for general truths, advice, and hypothetical situations. It's the most "neutral" conditional, suitable for both formal and casual contexts.
This is an intermediate pattern used regularly in everyday Japanese conversation and writing.
Structure
Verb(え-row) + ば
い-adj: ~い → ~ければ / な-adj: ~であれば
Formation#
| Type | Dictionary | 〜ば Form |
|---|---|---|
| Group 1 verb | 書く | 書けば |
| Group 2 verb | 食べる | 食べれば |
| する | する | すれば |
| くる | くる | くれば |
| い-adjective | 高い | 高ければ |
| な-adjective | 静かだ | 静かであれば |
Verbs: change final う-sound to え-sound + ば. い-adjectives: replace い with ければ.
When to Use#
- General truths and proverbs: 春になれば、桜が咲く (When spring comes, cherry blossoms bloom)
- Giving advice: もっと勉強すれば、合格できる (If you study more, you can pass)
- Hypothetical conditions: お金があれば、旅行したい (If I had money, I'd want to travel)
When NOT to Use#
- For conditions followed by volitional actions (requests, commands, invitations) — use たら instead: ✗ 暇であれば、来てください → ✓ 暇だったら、来てください
- For past/completed conditions — use たら: ✗ 家に着けば、電話があった → ✓ 家に着いたら、電話があった
Example Sentences#
- 急げば、間に合います。 — If you hurry, you'll make it in time.
- 駅に近ければ、便利です。 — If it's close to the station, it will be convenient.
- 予約すれば、安くなります。 — If you make a reservation, it will be cheaper.

Common Mistakes#
- Using ば with requests/commands — Unlike たら, the ば conditional generally cannot be followed by volitional expressions (ください, ましょう, etc.). ✓ 安ければ買います ✗ 安ければ買ってください
- Confusing ば, たら, なら, と — Each conditional has nuances: ば (general/hypothetical), たら (sequential/specific), なら (contextual/topic), と (natural/automatic result). 「押せば開く」(if you push, it opens — general) vs. 「押したら開いた」(I pushed and it opened — specific event).
- Wrong formation for い-adjectives — Replace い with ければ: 高い → 高ければ (not 高いば).
