〜なら
if (it's the case that)
〜なら is a conditional pattern meaning if (it's the case that). Japanese has four main conditional forms (ば, たら, なら, と), each with distinct nuances. Understanding when to use each one is key to expressing hypothetical situations, cause-and-effect, and conditions naturally.
This is an intermediate pattern used regularly in everyday Japanese conversation and writing.
Structure
[Clause / Noun] + なら
Formation#
| Type | Example | 〜なら Form |
|---|---|---|
| Verb (plain) | 行く | 行くなら |
| い-adjective | 高い | 高いなら |
| な-adjective | 静かだ | 静かなら |
| Noun | 学生 | 学生なら |
Attach なら to the plain form. For な-adjectives and nouns, drop だ before adding なら.
When to Use#
- Responding to what someone said: 日本に行くなら、京都がおすすめ (If you're going to Japan, I recommend Kyoto)
- Topic-based condition: 車ならあります (If it's a car you need, I have one)
When NOT to Use#
- When the meaning is closer to "if / when ~" — use 〜たら instead
- In very formal writing where a more sophisticated expression would be expected
Example Sentences#
- 静かなら、勉強に集中できます。 — If it's quiet, I can concentrate on my studies.
- アパートが高い階なら、眺めがいいでしょう。 — If the apartment is on a high floor, the view will be good.

Common Mistakes#
- Confusing 〜なら with 〜たら — While both are related, 〜なら expresses "if (it's the case that)" whereas 〜たら expresses "if / when ~." Pay attention to the specific nuance each pattern conveys.
- Direct translation from English — The concept expressed by 〜なら may not map one-to-one with its English translation. Focus on understanding the Japanese usage through example sentences rather than relying on the English gloss.
