Episode 50

After — ~のあとで

Learn how to sequence events in Japanese with のあとで — after dinner, after work, after a meal. A spatial metaphor for time built into the grammar.

N5no-ato-de-after

Japanese has a precise way to string events in time: のあとで. Put a noun first, add のあとで, then the action that follows. After dinner. After work. After the meeting. This episode covers the pattern, its spatial origin in the kanji 後, the verb variant, and a brief contrast with から.

What You'll Learn#

[noun] + のあとで + [main clause]N5

After [noun], [action]. Places the main action in the temporal position behind the noun event. Also works with verb plain-past + あとで.

食事のあとで散歩します (walk after a meal), 晩ご飯のあとで皿を洗います (dishes after dinner), 仕事のあとでビールを飲みます (beer after work)

New vocabulary:

  • 食事 (しょくじ) — a meal
  • 散歩 (さんぽ) — a walk; 散歩します = to take a walk
  • 晩ご飯 (ばんごはん) — dinner
  • 皿 (さら) — dish, plate
  • 仕事 (しごと) — work, job
  • 歯を磨く (はをみがく) — to brush teeth
  • 後 (あと) — behind, after; the spatial anchor of this pattern

Behind in Time#

The kanji 後 means "behind" or "back" — the same character appears in 後ろ (behind you, in space). Japanese uses this spatial concept for time: "in the position behind this event" is where the next event happens.

The particle で at the end of あとで is doing its familiar location work from episode 13. It marks the temporal position where the action takes place. Same particle, same logic — just pointed at time instead of space.

This makes the whole construction feel physically grounded. You finish the first thing, step past it, and you are now standing behind it — and that is where the second thing happens.

The Core Pattern#

The structure in order:

[noun] の あとで [main clause]

  1. Your noun — the first event
  2. の — connecting particle
  3. あとで — "in the position after / behind this"
  4. Main clause — what happens next

食事 means a meal. 散歩します means to take a walk.

The Verb Variant#

Nouns use の + あとで. Verbs use the plain past form (ta-form) + あとで — without の.

VerbPlain past+ あとで
食べる (to eat)食べた食べたあとで
行く (to go)行った行ったあとで

A common example: 食べたあとで歯を磨く — I brush my teeth after eating.

The noun pattern is more frequent in daily conversation. The verb pattern appears often in written Japanese and storytelling.

A Quick Contrast with から#

You learned から in episode 14 — the particle for "from."

  • から marks the starting point of something. "From when / from where it begins."
  • のあとで marks the position after something has finished. "In the temporal space behind it."

One is about departure, one is about arrival on the other side.

Listener Production#

You have finished dinner. You are tired. You want to express what you do next.

How would you say "I sleep after dinner" using のあとで?

Hint: 晩ご飯 is dinner. 寝ます means to sleep.

N5

I sleep after dinner.

Neutral

(ばん)(はん)のあとで()ます。

Casual

(ばん)(はん)のあとで()る。

Key Takeaway#

Key Takeaway

のあとで sequences events in time: [noun] + の + あとで + [main clause]. The kanji 後 means "behind" — a spatial metaphor for temporal order. The particle で marks the position where the action takes place. For verbs, use plain past (ta-form) + あとで without の.
