Purpose — ~ために

You know how to go somewhere to do something. Episode 45 gave you に行く for that. Today you go one level deeper: instead of saying what you are going to do, you say WHY. The word ために is the grammar of goals — and it connects your reason to your action with elegant precision.

The Two Patterns of ために#
ために sits in the middle of a sentence: reason first, ために next, action last.
How you fill the reason slot depends on what your reason is:
| Reason type | Pattern | Example |
|---|---|---|
| Noun | noun + の + ために | 試験のために勉強します |
| Verb | plain form + ために | 話すために勉強しています |
The key difference: nouns need the particle の as a bridge. Verbs connect directly.
Pattern 1 — Noun + の + ために#
I reviewed for the exam.
試験のため復習習しました。
試験のため復習習した。
I study Japanese for travel.
旅行のため日本語勉強勉強します。
旅行のため日本語勉強勉強する。
I bought a computer for work.
仕事のためにパソコンを買いました。
仕事のためにパソコンを買った。
I walk every day for my health.
健康のために毎日歩きます。
健康のために毎日歩く。
Pattern 2 — Verb (Plain Form) + ために#
When your reason is an action — something you want to DO — use the plain dictionary form of the verb and attach ために directly. No の needed.
I study in order to speak Japanese.
日本語を話すために勉強しています。
日本語を話すために勉強している。
I work hard in order to travel.
旅行するために仕事を頑張ります。
旅行するために仕事を頑張る。
Your Reason Has a Shape#
ために is the grammar of goals. Whatever your reason for learning Japanese is, this pattern gives it a form in the language:
| Your goal | Japanese |
|---|---|
| For travel | 旅行のために |
| For work | 仕事のために |
| For health | 健康のために |
| In order to speak | 話すために |
| In order to understand | 理解するために |
A Note on the Word Itself#
ために breaks into two pieces. The kanji 為 (read as ため) means "sake," "benefit," or "purpose" — it carries the meaning. The particle に points that purpose forward into the action that follows. So the literal feel is "for the sake of, directed toward." And 為 is not a word you only find in grammar — it appears in common cultural phrases like 日本のために (for the sake of Japan).
Listener Production — Your Turn#
Prompt: How would you say "I am learning Japanese to travel to Japan"?
Use the verb 旅行する in its plain form, add ために, then close with 日本語を勉強しています.
I am learning Japanese to travel to Japan.
日本に旅行するために日本語を勉強しています。
日本に旅行するために日本語を勉強している。
Key Takeaway
ために means "for the purpose of" or "in order to." With a noun, insert the particle の before ために. With a verb, use the plain dictionary form and connect directly. The reason comes first, ために sits in the middle, and the action closes the sentence.
