〜は
topic marker
N5particles
The particle は (pronounced "wa") marks the topic of a sentence — the thing you're talking about. It tells the listener "as for X, here's what I want to say about it." This is one of the most fundamental particles in Japanese and distinguishes the language's topic-comment structure from English's subject-verb-object pattern.
This is a foundational pattern that you will use from day one of your Japanese studies.
Structure
[Topic] + は + [Comment]
When to Use#
- Introducing what you're talking about: 私は学生です (As for me, I'm a student)
- Contrasting two items: コーヒーは好きですが、紅茶は好きじゃないです (I like coffee, but not tea)
- Making general statements: 日本は島国です (Japan is an island nation)
When NOT to Use#
- When emphasizing new or unexpected information — use が instead: 誰が来ましたか (Who came?)
- When the subject is the focus of the sentence rather than the topic — 雨が降っている (It's raining) not 雨は降っている
Example Sentences#
- 夏は暑いです。 — Summer is hot.
- 冬は寒いです。 — Winter is cold.

Common Mistakes#
- Confusing は with が — は marks the topic (known information), while が marks the subject (new or emphasized information). 「田中さんは先生です」(Tanaka is a teacher — talking about Tanaka) vs. 「田中さんが先生です」(Tanaka is the teacher — identifying who the teacher is).
- Pronouncing は as "ha" — When used as a particle, は is always pronounced "wa," not "ha."
- Overusing は — Not every sentence needs は. Short responses and answers to が-questions typically don't use it.
