〜が

subject marker

N5particles

The particle marks the grammatical subject and highlights new, important, or emphasized information. While は sets the topic ("as for X..."), が identifies the subject with focus ("X is the one that..."). Understanding the は/が distinction is one of the most important aspects of natural Japanese.

This is a foundational pattern that you will use from day one of your Japanese studies.

Structure

[Subject] + が + [Predicate]

When to Use#

  • Answering "who/what" questions: 誰来ましたか → 母来ました
  • Introducing new information: あ、バス来た! (Oh, the bus is here!)
  • With predicates like 好き, わかる, できる: 日本語わかります (I understand Japanese)

When NOT to Use#

  • When continuing to talk about an already-established topic — switch to は
  • In subordinate clauses where the subject is the same as the main clause — は is more natural

Example Sentences#

  • 信号が赤です。 — The traffic light is red.
  • 空が青いです。 — The sky is blue.
  • 風が強いです。 — The wind is strong.

Common Mistakes#

  1. Using が for established topics — Once something is introduced, switch to は. ✗ 「猫がいます。猫が黒いです」→ ✓ 「猫がいます。猫は黒いです」
  2. Forgetting が with adjectives of desire/ability — Patterns like 好き, ほしい, わかる, できる require が for the object: 寿司好きです, not 寿司を好きです.
